Consiglio Dolman: Crochet Foundry Magazine

Consiglio Dolman: Crochet Foundry Magazine

Every autumn, we traveled up the alps to Consiglio - a magical forest (ok, not LITERALLY magical, but it felt magical to my child’s mind) full of enchantment and mystery. We explored the forest, climbed the trees, explored the ancient ruins, and made magical memories that I still hold dear.

When I was asked to design a sweater for the Crochet Foundry Magazine, I knew the boho feel they were looking for fit in perfectly with my rustic memories of that mountain forest.

About the Dolman

A dolman top is characterized by a loose, oversized fit with “batwing” style sleeves. This pattern achieves that silhouette with four unique panels. Instead of making squares or rectangles, this pattern is comprised of four triangle patterns - so if you like making shawls, this pattern is the perfect gateway into making garments. Due to the triangle construction of each panel, the colorwork is as simple as striping a few rows of color - or leaving it out entirely. This pattern also looks delightful when made with self-stripping yarn, like Lion Brand Mandala. Self-stripping yarn takes all the planning out of the project and lets you just work it up, letting the yarn do all the colorwork for you.

About the Yarn

I used the We Crochet yarn Alpaca Cloud. The softness of this yarn is out of this world. As someone with a few sensory processing issues, the softness of the Alpaca means I can wear this item for long periods of time without feeling heavy, hot, itchy, or irritable. I highly recommend this yarn for items that will be worn close to the skin. I used three colors to make this pattern, but you could make it in a solid, or up to four colors.

Alpaca Cloud is a DK/3 weight yarn that is soft and easy to work with. You could also make this pattern using any other DK/3 weight yarn, as long as your gauge is on track.

About the Hook

I used the Furls Alpha hook in olive wood. I’ve been a lover of Furls hooks for a looong time. While I enjoyed the beauty of the Furls Alpha hook, the shape of the hook itself was a little difficult for me to use - which comes down to my own hook preferences. I tend to prefer a tapered hook, like a Boye, over the inline style of a Susan Bates hook. If you enjoy working with a Susan Bates style hook, you will definitely adore the Furls Alpha hooks. As a tapered hook crocheter, I think I’ll stick with my Furls Odyssey, since they remain my favorites!
