Spumiglie Hooded Cowl: Free Crochet Pattern
I strolled through the dusk. The bright carnival ride lights glittered in the evening like little jewel set in the crown of our little town square. I peered through the glass guarding the meringues, each one as fluffy as a rainbow cloud. I pointed to the one I wanted, paid the vender, and relished that first bite of colorful sweetness. I continued through the Feste De Spumilgie, stopping and tasting the sweet little meringues at each vendor - because who doesn’t like a festival all about sweets!
The Spumiglie Hooded Cowl is named after those delicious little delicacies we celebrated once a year. The puffed shell stitches remind me of the rows upon rows of puffed sweets. The cowl is simple to make and the perfect celebration of rainbow confections.

The Yarn:
I am so obsessed with this yarn! I used the Hobby Lobby Luxe Lollies in the color Count on Coconut to make my cowl. But don’t fall in love with the yarn yet - it is discontinued! I’m not crying about it. I’m just. I’m so sad. The Luxe Lollies yarn is a single ply roving style yarn - so unbelievably light and fluffy! A roving style yarn can be difficult to frog (unravel or undo your work), because the fibers tend to stick together, but the end product looks so luscious and soft, I find the extra trouble to be well worth it.
The Luxe Lollies are a worsted/4 weight yarn and is very similar to Red Heart Unforgettable. The Red Heart Unforgettable is widely available and comes in a myriad of stunning colorways! You can also use any worsted/4 weight yarn you have in your stash.
The Possibilities…
If you don’t have a self striping yarn like the one I used on hand, this would be a fun project to stash bust with! You can alternate colors each row to get a unique cowl as beautiful as you are! Or, to really let the texture shine, you could make it with a solid yarn or a tweed. I’m obsessed with Caron Simply Soft Tweeds and imagine it would be stunning with this textured pattern!
