Andra Tutto Bene Trivet: Free Crochet Pattern
Quarantine for many has been a time of loneliness, disappointment, and maybe even depression. With discouragement and fear on the rise, a few people went out of their way to encourage the masses. Some made humorous YouTube videos, some played music from their balcony, some donated food, some sewed masks, but the one thing they all had in common: they all stayed home.
The phrase “andra tutto bene” has become almost the national motto of Italy during their national quarantine of 2020. “All will be well”, a saying of hope and encouragement to the fearful masses of people huddled at home. “All will be well” to the frontline workers. “All will be well” to those taking food to the elderly. “All will be well.”
This trivet pattern reminds me of the Italian row houses that lined the winding roads of Castella d’ Aviano. Narrow and tall, the cream walls reached for the sky, held back by the red terracotta roofs. This pattern reflects those textured, concrete walls using the crochet seed stitch for the main portion of the house and a simple single crochet stitch for the door, windows, and roof.

The Materials:
Obviously, to make a trivet, you need a thick yarn. I used Lion Brand Hometown USA in tweeds and solids to create my trivets. I’ll be honest, these won’t see a lot of heavy duty use - I’ll probably keep them as a coaster for my teapot or something like that. If you are looking to make something that can handle high heat, like a pot holder, look for a bulky yarn with less acrylic in it - I’d hate for the item to melt in your hand!
I love using the tweed yarn for the main portion of the house. It perfectly mimics the rough texture of the walls of the Italian homes I grew up around. Of course, the red Hometown USA looks perfect to be the shutters and terracotta roof of the little homes. Of course, you can easily make these look like the row houses from the Czech Republic by using bright pastels instead of the muted Tuscan tones.
A thick yarn needs a thick hook! I felt like this was the perfect opportunity to use my 8 mm hook from the Leither Co.! I received this hook in their monthly crochet subscription box. You can read more about their products, hooks, yarn, and subscription program here.
The Collaboration:
Scrolling through my Instagram feed recently, a knitting pattern seemed to jump out at me! The Home Sweet Home Trivet pattern by Amanda Tozzi of Cuddle Bunny Knits spoke to me. As you know, while I live in Richmond, VA, my parents live in Italy near Naples. The idea of commemorating people like my mom, who is sewing close to fifty masks a day to help her community, spoke to my heart. I reached out to Amanda to ask about collaborating on a crochet version of her pattern. Well, she said yes, we are friends now, and here is the pattern! But, please, head to her Instagram to give her a follow! If you are interested in the knitted version of the pattern, use the link below to find it on Ravelry.
