Pickens Summer Scarf: Free Crochet Pattern

A mischievous breeze rustles through the black-eyed susans, picking up the scent of fresh grilled burgers, and tickles your nose. Summer is here! The days of pool splashing, fun running, endless vacations and cookouts, and cool nights around a firepit! My summer bucket list looks a little different as an adult than it did as a child, but I still enjoy the sleep-in, care free days of not getting everyone up and ready for school in the morning. Well, by sleep in I mean 7:30 am, because my kids are so excited about not going to school!

As a child, I remember the big events my mother hosted for Memorial Day and Fourth of July - the massive cookouts with large guest lists. My first (and only) yarn bomb was for the Fourth of July picnic one year - we tied colored yarn onto our fence in the shape of the American flag. I realize not all people celebrate these holidays the same way we do, but growing up a military brat - we did!

The Pickens Summer Scarf is designed with my mother in mind - the one who made my childhood summers fun-filled, exciting, tasty, and patriotic!

The Yarn

The moment I saw the Lion Brand Shawl in a Ball in the color Moonstone - I knew I would make something for my mother out of it! Of course, it sat around in my stash for six months before the idea for Pickens was born. The Shawl in a Ball yarn is listed as a 4 weight, but personally, I felt while working with it, that the yarn seemed more similar to 3 weight yarns I’ve used in the past. This yarn is a soft cotton blend with a glittering metallic streak running through it, giving the finished item a bit of sparkle - and what girl doesn’t love a little something shiny?

The lightweight cotton yarn made this the perfect materials for a summer lace wrap or scarf. This yarn also comes in so many amazing colorways (see a variety of them here), anyone can find a color they want to work with!

Perhaps you want to make the project using yarn already in your stash, but you don’t have enough Shawl in a Ball. Other yarns that would work well with this pattern include Lion Brand Shawl in a Cake, Lion Brand Mandala, Mary Maxim Prism, or any other DK/3 weight yarn.

Remember, the fiber content of the yarn you choose will alter how heavy or light this wrap will be. If you use a wool/acrylic based yarn, like a Mandala, you will get a nice, cool weather scarf. A light cotton, like Bernat Softee Baby Cotton, will give you a nice summer weight scarf.

The Stitches

One of my goals with this pattern was to design something that almost anyone could make! The body of the scarf is simple, consisting of only double crochet and chain stitches to form a sort of gingham look from just the stitches. Of course, if you want to make this summer lace scarf bigger, more shawl like, simply add a few rows to the length!

The lace edging is a little more challenging, but written out clearly and simply to help the advanced beginner through some stitches that might be new - like the picot stitch. Of course, if the picot stitch is something you are not comfortable working with, you can substitute a simple chain stitch in its place. The edging won’t have quite the same look, but it will still be beautiful!

Just a quick note, the lace edging has a bit of flare to it, so it falls in ruffles. The edge of the lace does not line up perfectly with the straight edge of the scarf.
