Pickens Ruana: A Free Crochet Pattern
Oh, the watermelon days of summer. The days of water balloon fights, splash pads, gardens, worms and fireflies: these are the days of summer. The nights of summer are for marshmallow roasting, guitar playing, and wrapping up in crochet by the evening fire while sipping an iced tea.
The Pickens Ruana (or kimono, if you follow the alternate instructions), is the ultimate summer wrap up. Want to cover up by the pool? Pull on this gorgeous piece of lace. The Inspiration
Ok, my inspiration on this particular pattern isn’t as fancy as some of my other ones. Basically, I designed a wrap for my mom, then she asked if I could use the same stitches to make a ruana that she could pull around her tightly when she drives with the top down on her convertible VW bug. So, I pulled out some more Lion Brand Shawl in a Ball and started stitching! However, I now love this garment so much, I think I’ll keep it and maybe make another one for her.

The Yarn
As I said above, I used Lion Brand Shawl in a ball for this pattern. This dk/3 weight cotton is light and airy with a little sparkle and halo. The stitches look so ethereal in this fiber! I used three skeins of the summery yarn to make the One Size version of this pattern. You could use four skeins to make the plus sized version. Of course, if you want to shop your stash, you could easily get away with any Dk/3 weight yarn as long as you make the gauge listed in the pattern. I can imagine making it with Comfy Cotton Blend and using it as a fun swimsuit coverup.

The Hook
Personally, whenever I take on a larger project like this, I want to make sure I have a comfortable hook on hand! I’ve often struggled with tendonitus from long hours of crocheting, but having a quality ergonomic hooks definitely helps! My current favorite are the Furls Crochet Odyssey hooks! You can find them in a wide array of color to match your personality or project. They are a little on the heavy side and very well balanced. I find they slip easily through the yarn and are quite strong for the amount of abuse I put my tools through. And when I say, “I put my tools through”, I mean, “they can withstand my kids taking and dropping them over and over again.”

Lion Brand Shawl in a Ball (518 yd/474 m)
OS - 3 balls
PS - 4 balls
Hook I/5.5 mm
Yarn Needle
Four Stitch Markers
Stitches and Terms (U.S. Terms):
Ch - Chain
Dc - Double Crochet
Picot - See special stitches
Ea - Each
Sc - Single Crochet
Gauge: 14 stitches x 6 rows = 4” Gauge is worked in dc
Notes:
Stitches between *stars* are repeated.
Stitches in (parenthesis) are made in the same stitch or space.
Any DK/3 weight yarn should work with this pattern, as long as you meet gauge.
The pattern is worked in two long panels, then seamed together halfway down the middle.
Finished measurements (blocking will make the ruana both wider and longer):
O.S.: 32” x 64”, 81 cm x 162 cm
P.S.: 42” x 74”, 107 cm x 188 cm
If the stitch count is the same for both sizes, only one number will be given. If the stitch count is different, they will be listed as follows: O.S. , P.S.
One size should fit a traditional S-L. Plus Size will fit an XL-3XL. Note - you can obviously work whichever size you like the fit of.

Row 4-81 (97): repeat rows 2 and 3, placing a stitch marker at each end of row 38 (48) on each panel. Do not fasten off, continue using this yarn for the front edging.

Row 2: Ch 4 (counts as dc, ch 1) dc in same st, ch 1, sk 1, sc in next 3 sc, ch 1, sk 1, *(dc, ch 2, dc) in next sc (this should be the center sc over the ch 3 sp from the body of the scarf), ch 1, sk 2, sc in next three sc (this is the center 3 sc over the 5 dc block), ch 1, sk 2* repeat until 9 sc left, ch 2, sk 2. Center Back Seam
Place both panels one top of each other, lining up the stitch markers you placed in row 38 (48). Beginning at the bottom, slip stitch through both panels until you reach the stitch markers. Fasten off, weave in ends. Continue to Back Edging.
Optional side seams: After completing the back edging, fold the ruana so the front and back edging are on top of each other (like you would wear it), pick up a loop through the front and back portions and slip stitch the sides 3/4 of the way up to form a kimono instead of a ruana.

Back Edging
Row 1: Attach yarn in the foundation chain and pull up a loop. Sc in each stitch to center seam, sc 3 in the center seam, sc in each stitch to the end. (125 sc)(195 sc).

Finishing Touches
Optional: If you prefer a kimono style, turn inside out and seam the sides using the same method as seaming the back.
Blocking: This pattern will look amazing blocked! Wet the item thoroughly and stretch it to the desired shape and pin in place. Let dry completely (usually 24 hours).
