Buddy Basketweave Beanie, Adjustable Size Crochet Pattern

Buddy Basketweave Beanie, Adjustable Size Crochet Pattern

As much as I enjoy making, I somehow struggle to find time to make things specifically for my own family! A couple years ago, I made this hat for my son for Christmas. This year, I made a larger version for my husband. This simple textured pattern is perfect for the picky man in your life, but it is also a fantastic gender neutral pattern that look stunning in any yarn!

Yarn

I used the fantastically soft Mighty Stitch in worsted weight from We Crochet or Knit Picks. This yarn is part merino wool and part acrylic, giving it a little more shine than wool, and a little more breathability than acrylic. This yarn is a good replacement for Caron Simply Soft, which tends to split. This yarn is a similar thickness, has a nice sheen without being too shiny, and doesn’t split nearly as much as Caron Simply Soft. The Mighty Stitch Yarn by We Crochet is available in SO. MANY. COLORS. I’ve used it for quite a few projects now. It is definitely my go-to worsted yarn at this point. You can use the button below to browse through all the amazing yarns they offer!

You are gonna need a hook

If you know me AT ALL, you know I’m gonna suggest you pick up a Furls Streamline hook for this project! I love using my Furls hooks - their comfort level is OFF THE CHARTS. Their Streamline series are a great starter hook when you are switching from a traditional aluminum hook to a more ergonomic option. But, y’all, treat your hands right and you will be able to crochet forever!

Faux Fur Pom Poms

While my husband didn’t want a faux fur pom pom on his hat, my son loves having one on his! I usually pick mine up in bulk on Amazon to last me through the full hat making season. I also sometimes purchase special ones from individual makers on Instagram.

Inclusive Sizing

Most heads follow a general growth pattern - of course, there is always the kids with bigger or smaller heads than usual, but the general stretchiness of crochet makes up for that! The pattern is written in four sizes, Infant, Toddler, Child, Youth, and Adult. In this blog post, I will include the adult size, but if you are interested in the full pattern, you can purchase it on either my Etsy shop or in my Ravelry store. Purchasing the pattern helps me keep the lights on, the website up, and the free patterns coming!

If you want to, you could easily figure out the sizing for yourself using these sizing charts available for free. Simply make the band of the hat to the size you need - but make sure the number of rows you use for the band is a multiple of 4, so the modified basket weave stitch will work! Then basically follow the adult pattern (ignoring the stitch count), until you reach the height you want.

Finishing Touches

Seaming

1. Turn hat inside out.

2. Thread the long tail through the yarn needle.

3. Weave the needle in and out of the final row of stitches.

4. Pull tight.

5. Place several, secure stitches in an “x” shape over the cinched up crown.

6. Fasten off securely and weave in the end.

Adding a Pom Pom

1. With hat still inside out, place button on the seam.

2. Using thread needle and matching thread, sew the button to the inside of the seam.

3. Fasten off the thread.

4. Turn hat right side out, using a hook (or your fingers), thread the elastic loop from the faux fur pom pom through the stitches of the crown and loop it over the button.

Care Instructions

For washing the hat, remove the pom pom, then use the care instructions included on the yarn wrapper. Please remember, most faux fur pom poms do not wash well. If you must, wash it in a delicates bag and let air dry. When the pom pom is fully dry, you can fluff it using a hair drier on low for a few seconds.
