I have heard people say that Paris is the city of love. Obviously they have never been to Verona! The city of Romeo and Juliette, Verona just oozes with romance! The strong Italian architecture accented by hanging baskets of blossoms, the foliage contrasting the terra cotta roofs, everything about Verona romances me, even the pizza! Inspired by the love and architecture of this great Italian city, I took up my hook and got to stitching!

In my Verona Beanie, cluster stitches mimic the round arches while front post stitches translate the peaked roofs. The ribbing on the brim seems to imitate the tall poplar trees reaching gloriously for the sky!

Or, if you look closely, you can see an almost diamonds and pearls texture take shape! The delicate pink puff stitch pearls offset by the tweed diamonds across the center romance me, much the way that sweet city of Verona did so long ago. I paired Caron Simply Soft Tweeds as my Color A, and Yarn Bee’s Brushworks as my Color B. I love the marriage of soft yarn and structured stitches in this hat. I hope the Verona Beanie inspires you as much as this gorgeous vista inspired me.

The Yarn:

I used a combination of yarns for this project. Even though Caron Simply Soft Tweed is a 4 weight yarn and Hobby Lobby Brushworks is a 3 weight yarn, when holding them, the weights we close enough I felt they would pair well. Unless you can tell be the feel of the yarn, I recommend using a 4/worsted weight yarn for this project.

I love that the tweed yarn isn’t just cream, but has a little bit of browns and grays worked into the fiber - giving it that antiquated look of old stone buildings. The Brushworks yarn is an alpaca bland, which gives it that slight fuzzy halo - almost like something a little worn. The soft rose color seemed almost faded to me, which married beautifully with the Tweeds. The yarn choice was perfect for the historic romance I desired to capture in this crochet beanie pattern.

Obviously, you can make your Verona Beanie using a single color or striping them, like I did. Other yarns that would work well with this project are Hobby Lobby Soft and Sleek, I Love This Yarn, Lion Brand Touch of Alpaca.

The Fashion Potential:

With cooler weather around the corner (or here, or almost gone - We live in a big world!) nothing keeps the ears warm like a handmade with love crochet beanie. I love rocking mine with my hair down, a pink ruffled shirt, my jeans - and of course, the fluffiest slipper socks and I can find! Don’t forget to grab a to-go cup of your favorite hot beverage, coffee for me, please!

The Stitches:

The charm of this romantic crochet beanie is in the textural difference between the front post stitches and the puff stitches (also called a 3 Hdc Cluster). Every crocheter seems to know the basics of how to make a puff stitch, but we all vary on how many loops we use and how fluffy we make them. For this pattern, I used three yarn overs for each puff stitch, finishing it off with a chain stitch. If you want puffier pearls, use more yarn overs.

The front post stitches lean this way and that to create a ring of diamonds around the center of the hat. If you are uncertain as to how to make any of the stitches, refer to the video tutorial linked below:

Stitches:

Ch—Chain

Sc—Single Crochet

Sk—Skip

Hdc—Half Double Crochet

Fphdc—Front Post Half Double Crochet

Bphdc—Back Post Half Double Crochet

FpDc—Front Post Double Crochet

3 Hdc Cluster—Three Half Double Crochet Cluster

FpDc 2 Tog—Front Post Double Crochet Two Together

SC Dec—Single Crochet Decrease (for bun beanie option)

Special Instructions/Stitches:

3 Hdc Cluster—(Yarn over, pull up a loop) 3 times in same space; yarn over, pull through all seven loops on hook. Cluster Made!

FpDc 2 Tog—Yarn over, pull up a loop from around the post of indicated stitch from previous row; yarn over, pull through two loops on hook (first Dc started); yarn over, pull up a loop from around the post of the next indicated stitch; yarn over, pull through two loops; yarn over, pull through remaining loops. You got this!

Sc 2 Tog—Yarn over, pull up a loop; yarn over, pull up a loop in the next stitch; yarn over, pull through all loops on hook. Woohoo!

(Fpdc, sc, Fpdc) in same stitch—Start by completing the first fpdc in the indicated stitch, place the sc in the normal spot of the same stitch, then complete a second fpdc around the post of the same stitch. You will create a V from the fpdc with a sc in the middle.

Notes:

The Verona Beanie is an adjustable hat pattern made in multiples of four. If you need to decrease or increase the size of the hat, do so by adjusting the starting chain in increments of four stitches. This pattern is for a small adult size (my size!), but I made one for a child using a starting chain of 76 as well.

Use the optional last two rows to covert your Verona Beanie into a bun beanie, if you prefer.

Pattern:

(In Color A)

Ch 84, join to form a ring (look out for twists!)

Rnd 1: Ch1, Sc in ea (84 sc)

Rnd 2: Ch 2 (counts as first bphdc), fphdc 2, *bphdc 2, fphdc 2* repeat around, bphdc around last stitch. Join. (42 fphdc, 42 bphdc)

Rnd 3-8: Repeat Round 2 (Optional, switch to Color B)

Rnd 9: Ch1, 3 hdc cluster, ch1, sk1, *3hdc cluster, ch1, sk1* repeat, join to first 3 hdc cluster. (42 clusters)

Rnd 10-11: Sl st to first ch 1 space, ch 1, 3 hdc cluster in ch 1 sp, ch 1, *3 hdc cluster in next ch1 sp, ch1 * repeat, join to first cluster. Each 3 hdc cluster is worked in a ch 1 space. (42 clusters) (Optional, switch to Color A)

Rnd 12: Hdc in each stitch (84 hdc)

Rnd 13: Ch 1, hdc, sk 1, (fpdc, sc, fpdc) in next stitch, sk 1, *hdc, sk 1, (fpdc, sc, fpdc) in next stitch, sk 1* repeat around. Join to first hdc. (22 V’s made from (fpdc, sc, fpdc)).

Rnd 14: Ch 1, hdc, fpdc around first fpdc of Rnd 13, hdc, *fpdc around next fpdc of Rnd 13, hdc* repeat around. Join to first hdc. (42 hdc, 42 fpdc)

Rnd 15: Ch 1, hdc, hdc, fpdc 2 tog—first leg around first fpdc of Rnd 14, second leg around next fpdc of Rnd 14, creating upside down V—*hdc 3, fpdc 2 tog* repeat around, hdc in last stitch, join. (22 fpdc 2 tog)

Rnd 16: Ch 1, hdc in ea (84 hdc) (Optional, switch to Color B)

Rnd 17—19: Repeat rounds 9-11 (Optional, switch to Color A)

Rnd 20-24: Repeat Rounds 12-16, For fitted beanie, fasten off, leaving a long tail.

Rnd 24-26 (for slouch beanie): Hdc in each (84 hdc) Fasten off, leaving a long tail.

Rnd 25 (for bun beanie): Sc dec around (42 sc dec)

Rnd 26 (for bun beanie): Sc dec around (21 sc dec), Fasten off, weave in ends.

Fitted and Slouch Beanie Finishing Instructions:

You can continue to repeat rounds until the hat is the desired length—but this is a good size for me! Finish off, leave a looooong tail, we will use it to sew up the hat. Turn the hat inside out. Using the yarn needle, weave the long tail in and out of every hdc. Pull tight to cinch up the top of the hat. Turn back right side out, stitch an X across the cinched up top to keep it tight. Attach the pom pom, still using the extremely long tail. Weave in the tail after securely attaching the pom pom.
