Misawa Shawl: A Free Crochet Pattern
My memories of Japan are watercolor memories splashes across my mind: vague, but bright and beautiful. Few images of my young life in Japan stand out to me as strongly as the bright pink cherry blossoms. I wish I could paint for you the image of a stone Buddha, sitting tall among the trees, surrounded by small temples and places of worship and memory. I remember holding my mother’s hand as we wandered the vast and immaculate gardens - that bright pink shower of pink blossoms imprinted indelibly on my mind. Even today, I gravitate toward that color above all others. That bright, cherry blossom pink signifies beauty, wonder, and the marriage of man’s graceful handiwork and natures loving embrace.
The Misawa Shawl barely holds a candle to those delicate memories. Simple in its construction, the true delight, for me, in the Misawa Shawl is the petals and buds pink edging that is so reminiscent of the pink cherry blossoms that enchant my mind.

The Supplies
Every now and then, you find the perfect pairing of yarns and hook. This project was one of those times. I’d received a couple balls of Whims Merino in the Blue coloras part of a giveaway some time ago, but I just didn’t know what to use it for. Then, later, I received some Pink Whims Merino in the same DK weight when I designed this hooded scarf pattern for the Furls Crochet blog hop. I had enough pink left over to accent something, but not enough for a full project.
Anyway…
While working up the Vigonovo Hooded Scarf pattern, I fell in love with the bounce and texture of the Whims Merino yarn. It is a Z-Twist yarn, which means it is specially wound in the opposite direction of normal yarn to help prevent the yarn from splitting when it is worked with a crochet hook. Most yarn is wound with knitters in mind, but Z-Twist is formulated for crochet! The Furls Whims Merino is a wool/nylon blend, and honest, one of my favorites! Obviously, I’ve raved about their hooks often, but you can’t go wrong with their yarn, either!
I used my Furls Streamline hook for this project. The Streamline series is made from highly polished wood. The yarn slides easily on the hook, while still having slightly more “grip” than a metal hook.

I wanted this design to be easy. Like, SUPER easy. So easy that almost any beginner could make it! Also, it was a stressful week and I needed a mindless make that I could binge watch TV while I worked on it (#reallife). The body of the pattern consists primarily of double crochet and half double crochet. I worked the double crochet in my main color, blue, and the half double crochets in my contrast color, pink. I love how the pink stripes gradually get closer and closer together as the pattern progresses, ending in an explosion of pink petals on the edging. Of course, I’ve included a full stitch tutorial for the edging, just to help you out!
If you want, you can purchase the digital download of this pattern. I used a new format for this one, and I have to admit, I love it. I will be using this format for my patterns from now on! Each row is highlighted in alternating colors to help you keep track of you spot in the pattern and the final stitch count for each row is easily found!
