San Fior Shawl: Free Crochet Pattern
Many years have passed since I climbed that steep hill, but as I twirled my new shawl in the autumn sun, my mind walks those pathways again. Of course, it is spring in my mind as I climb toward San Fior - the agriturismo we visited early each year. I remember the sun filtering through the fresh green foliage overhead, just as the sun now filtered through the delicate lace stitches of the shawl.
San Fior. I remember you. I remember my childhood anticipation as we climbed the steep, well-worn path. We turned the corner and there stood the old stone building with its ancient terra cotta roof ready to welcome us. “Boof.” The shaggy sheep dog acknowledged our arrival with the thump of his tail, a quick word of canine greeting, then he returned to his sun-warmed nap.
Eagerness gripped my mind as I saw the beauty of the farm before me. Fresh wildflowers waved from the fields while a chicken clucked a warning to her young. The cows grazed, undisturbed by our presence. We darted down the dirt road toward the familiar sound of lambs bleating. They bounded out of their pen to greet us. We ruffled their wool, fed straw to their mothers, and reveled in the bright glory of early spring.
All these images danced through my now much older mind. San Fior. That spring oasis of joy!
Now, many years later, the seasons and times have changed, but the joy of those experiences live again in my mind as I wrap myself in the silk stitches of the San Fior Shawl.

The Fashion Potential
Unique. Delicate. Inspirational. We all want our fashion to speak to our maker mindset. The San Fior Shawl is all those things. Consisting of rows upon rows of delicate shell stitches broken up by basic double crochet rows, this shawl brings the drama - but in a subtle way. It can be worn as a scarf, as I prefer, or as a shoulder wrap to ward of the early evening chill. Undeniably stunning fans grace the edging of this shawl, like little explosions of floral joy. A must-make for any shawl enthusiast, this one will definitely turn heads and demand the question, “You MADE that??” Why, yes. I did. And it’s amazing!
The Material
I am delighted to partner with independent yarn dyer Natalie Zimmerman of the ND Yarn Company. She sent me this gorgeous silk/wool blend in a light fingering weight to make this shawl out of. I was immediately drawn to her colorway Hill Country Sunset. I have to say, this yarn is so delicately soft, so stretchy, and so warm - it really is the perfect pairing with this pattern! Natalie has generously offered kits of this pattern on her website as well!
Of course, some of us prefer to shop our stash or our local craft stores for yarn we can touch before we buy (although, I can promise, you won’t regret purchasing Natalie’s yarn!). I had my testers try out a variety of yarns. One even used Lion Brand Mandala (a 3/dk weight yarn)! Of course, her finished shawl was much bigger than mine, but the cozy factor is off the charts!! If you are looking for an oversized version of this shawl, I’d definitely look through the Mandala yarns.
Of course, if you are wanting to make the shawl in a yarn more similar to the one I used, I have found that Hobby Lobby offers a cotton blend in fingering weight called Rainbow Wrapsody that is available in a variety of colorways - in fact, I have a second San Fior shawl in this yarn on my hook right now to be gifted later this year!
Don’t have a Hobby Lobby? You can also find Red Heart It’s A Wrap on Amazon - it is a fingering weight cotton blend. Those cotton yarns have such a sharp stitch definition - the shells and fans seem to just pop!
The Possibilities
They are endless, right? With a hook in hand and a yarn you love, the possibilities are truly endless! One tester doubled the size of her shawl by repeating certain sections until she had an absolutely huge and glorious piece of lace - she insists she will keep it for herself.
But, of course, this San Fior Shawl is such a delicate lace pattern, I imagine it would make a stunning prayer shawl. Such a gift, with blessings and love poured into it, will definitely make an impact on the receiver.
This lace shawl pattern is definitely an intermediate pattern. If you are looking for an easier shawl pattern, check out my Hohenwerfen Wrap! The best part? The Hohenwerfen Wrap is a free pattern made from one large cake of gradient yarn.
And now, for what we’ve all been waiting for…
